Natural Remedies To Help Heal Your Gingivitis And Periodontal Disease

Posted on

Nearly 50 percent of adults in the United States have gum disease, or periodontal disease, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) can increase your risk of diabetes, heart attack, and lung disease. It is important to take care of the health of your gums and teeth, which can help improve your overall health. Here are some natural remedies you can use to increase your oral health and fight off gum disease.

Treat Your Teeth and Gums with Salt, Oil, and Turmeric

Salt Water Rinse

Rinsing your mouth with salt water can help remedy and prevent gingivitis. Salt has antiseptic and antibacterial properties and can prevent bacteria growth in your mouth, which is a cause of gum disease. Salt rinse can also reduce inflammation in swollen gums if you already suffer from gum disease.

Each morning and night combine one-half teaspoon of salt with a glass of warm water, stir to combine, and use it to rinse your mouth. Swish the solution around inside your mouth as you would mouthwash. Then, spit it into the sink. This salt water rinse solution will help reduce any gum swelling that comes with gum disease.

Oil Pulling

Swishing certain types of oils inside your mouth is also a way to help reduce and prevent gingivitis. The practice of swishing coconut, sesame, safflower, or olive oil in your mouth reduces plaque and pulls harmful cavity-causing bacteria from your mouth.

Complete your daily oil pulling before you eat or drink anything, or brush your teeth. Place approximately one tablespoonful of your choice of oil in your mouth and swish it around your teeth and gums for 15 to 20 minutes. It is not recommended to gargle the oil. The oil also helps to strengthen your gum tissue, protecting them from damage caused by plaque build-up.

After you have finished swishing the oil, spit it into the trash. The reason you don't want to spit the oils into your sink is because it can cause a build-up on the insides of your pipes, leading to drain clogs later on. Last, rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth, as usual.

Turmeric Paste

Turmeric is a spice that you can find in the spice section of most grocery stores, but you can use it for more than seasoning food. Using turmeric to make a tooth treatment paste can help reduce the plaque on your teeth and harmful bacteria that causes gum infections and cavities. It can also reduce any pain and inflammation you are experiencing in your gums from any current gum disease.

Mix up a simple paste of turmeric and water, creating a paste with a similar consistency of toothpaste, then apply it onto a toothbrush and brush your teeth with it twice a day for several weeks.

You can also make a gum paste treatment that you apply and leave on your gums for a daily treatment. Combine one-half teaspoon of turmeric powder with vitamin E oil until it creates a thick paste. Press it onto any areas of gum inflammation and pain. After ten minutes, rinse the paste off with warm water.

Make Your Own Natural Healing Toothpaste

Along with these three treatments to help prevent and treat gum disease, you can make and use daily a homemade toothpaste that will give you additional oral health benefits. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so before you combine all the toothpaste ingredients, you can warm the oil in a pan on the stove. First, combine six tablespoons of coconut oil with six tablespoons of baking soda, then add in your choice of essential oils. You will need to add approximately ten to fifteen drops of essential oil to every twelve tablespoons of oil and baking soda mixture.

Choose the essential oils you want to add to your toothpaste based on the healing properties and taste you want your toothpaste to contain. For example, cinnamon provides antioxidant protection and reduces inflammation, while providing protection against fungus, bacteria, and viruses. Peppermint is also a powerful antioxidant and gives your toothpaste a nice flavor. Clove has been used as a dental anesthetic for many years, and when you add it to your homemade toothpaste, it provides protection against bacterial, fungus, and viruses, and is an antioxidant.
