3 Ways to Keep Your Sinusitis Under Control

Posted on

Sinusitis is a condition that refers to inflammation of the sinus cavities. If you suffer from sinusitis, you may find yourself visiting the doctor frequently to get antibiotics to treat your chronic sinus infections. While there really is nothing you may be able to do to fully eliminate the sinus problems you have, there are three different things you can try that might help you keep your symptoms under control.

Modify Your Environment

When you experience sinus problems, it's likely that they are triggered by something. For many people, the things that trigger the symptoms include pollen, mold, and dry air. If these things seem to trigger your symptoms, you may want to make some changes to the environment in your home. Here are a few things you might want to consider doing to make the air less harmful for you to breathe in while you are at home:

  • Run a humidifier—Dry air is one of the worst things for people suffering from sinusitis. Sinusitis causes your nose to be dryer than it needs to be, and this is what can lead to blockage in your nasal passage and in your sinus cavities. If you run a humidifier, it will place moisture in the air, and air that is moist will be better for your symptoms.
  • Clean your home—If your home contains a lot of dust, mold, or other allergens, you should clean it up. This may include steam cleaning your carpeting, changing the air filter in your furnace, and getting rid of any moisture problems that are causing mold to grow inside your house. Taking these steps will improve the quality of your indoor air, and this could offer some relief for your sinusitis symptoms.

Modifying your environment can help; however, you may need to take a couple other steps to find relief for your symptoms.

Use a Neti Pot

A neti pot is a small, inexpensive device you can purchase as most pharmacies, and it offers a way for you to irrigate your nasal passages. One of the most common symptoms of sinusitis is a clogged nose. No matter what you do, you may constantly feel like your nose is plugged, even though you may blow your nose and nothing comes out. The problem is that the clogs are usually deep within the passage and are hard to reach, but this is why a neti pot may help.

Using a neti pot takes a little work at first to get used to, but it can offer a lot of relief. To use one, you will need to place saline solution in the device. Next, you must lean over a sink and pour the solution with the pot into one nostril. As you do this, the solution should work deep into the nasal passages and will then come out the other nostril. This process can be slightly uncomfortable when you first begin using it, but over time you will learn the best techniques to use to get the most of the treatment.

Try Medicated Nasal Spray

Nasal spray is something you can purchase over-the-counter at pharmacies, or you can purchase prescription nasal spray if your doctor recommends it. Over-the-counter options typically contain saline solution, just like you use in a neti pot, but prescription types contain medication. The most common medication used in prescription nasal sprays is corticosteroids, which are extremely helpful for reducing inflammation in the nasal passages and sinus cavities.
